MasterCard tests new m-payment app for Hoyte cinemas in Australia

MasterCard's new mobile payment application

MasterCard is piloting QkR, a new mobile payment application, in collaboration with Commonwealth Bank in Australia. The new technology will be compatible at various La Premiere Hoyts cinemas and will enable movie goers to order food and drink directly from their smartphone whilst watching a film. iPhone and Android users download the QkR by MasterCard app and either scan or type in the unique QR code on the seat to bring up the cinema’s menu on their phone where they can make purchases. Those with NFC-enabled phones can just tap their device against the code. The cinema is then alerted of the order and seat number and the food or drink is taken to the customer. Credit or debit card details need to be registered with the app the first time it is used. Transactions made with QkR are processed with the same level of security as all MasterCard platforms and no data is stored on the phone. The technology is being piloted for a few weeks this month at various cinemas in Sydney including Westfield Chatswood and The Entertainment Quarter.

Matt Barr, Australia’s Head of Market Development for MasterCard, says they are “delivering what can only be described as generational change in payments technology.”

The QkR app is the latest project between MasterCard and Commonwealth Bank who have recently launched Commbank Kaching, an iPhone app compatible with MasterCard PayPass that enables peer to peer and contactless payments.
