eBay is partnering with Three in a deal that will see its e-commerce apps pre-loaded on smartphones sold by the UK mobile carrier as the firm attempts to streamline the mobile shopping experience. eBay says that it is expecting to process USD8bn in mobile e-commerce sales this year, up from USD5bn last year as consumers increasingly use their smartphones and tablets to complete online purchases. The firm also expects its online payment division PayPal to process USD7bn worth of mobile payments this year, up from USD4bn last year as the technology becomes increasingly mainstream.
“Mobile commerce is changing the way people shop and pay and the ways in which merchants of all sizes engage consumers,” says CEO and president John Donahoe. “We’re seeing a new retail paradigm emerge through mobile. Consumers are in control and they want to shop anytime, anywhere. That creates opportunity.”
