Visa launches new service facilitating mobile payment accounts “over the air”

Linking Visa payment accounts with smartphones

The new service enables financial institutions and mobile network operators to securely download payment account information to NFC-enabled smartphones (view press release). The service was developed in partnership with Trusted Service Management (TSM) company Oberthur Technologies who will provide the necessary technology to deliver Visa’s mobile provisioning service. The new solution is designed to enable financial service providers and mobile network operators to securely link Visa payment accounts to smartphones.

Head of mobile products at Visa Bill Gajda says “financial institutions, mobile network operators, and even transit operators now have a simple, secure process to activate payment applications at scale and make mobile payments part of everyday life for consumers around the world.”

Intel has already partnered with Visa to make its Smartphone Reference Device compatible with Visa’s mobile provisioning service.
