Global reach

Western Union has entered into mobile money transfer agreements with 26 mobile wallet providers in 22 countries around the world (view press release). Among these partnerships, twenty of the agreements are with mobile network operators collectively representing over 285 million subscribers, while the remaining six are with banks and independents. Mobile money transfer services have already launched in nine countries including Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Canada, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, the Philippines, Tanzania and the US.

New mobile services have been launched in Bangladesh in collaboration with Banglalink, Burkina Faso with Inova and Madagascar with Telma. The launches follow the announcement this week by Western Union at MWC of four new strategic alliances that the company had entered into. These include an agreement with Ericsson to integrate its Mobile Money Transfer network with Ericsson’s mobile commerce solutions; a partnership with Italian mobile network operator WIND to allow the company’s 21 million subscribers to make mobile money transfer transactions; an agreement with Roshan to introduce mobile money transfer services to Afghanistan; and an alliance with Millicom International Cellular S.A. to enable cross-border mobile money transfer services in Latin America.
