Square nabs PayPal VP

PayPal VP jumping ship to Square

PayPal VP Alyssa Cutright is jumping ship to payments competitor Square, where she is assuming the role of VP of International next week. The move ties up 12 years at PayPal, where Cutright’s roles included local business, global risk assessment and, most recently, the position of VP of product for North America. Cutright is the latest in a string of high-profile departures from PayPal, including president Scott Thompson’s move to become CEO of Yahoo!.

The appointment marks an upswing in Square’s ambitions, with the service currently only available in the US. The firm has not yet indicated which markets it is planning to move into, but is looking to compete more closely with PayPal which took aim at the firm with the launch of a rival plug-in card reader, PayPal Here, last week. PayPal is denying that Cutright’s departure is related to the launch of its new product.
