Portugal Telecom begins 3 month pilot of TMN mobile wallet service

Mobile payments via NFC, SMS, USSD and QR codes

The trial service is available to the company’s eleven thousand employees and enables mobile payments on any mobile phone via NFC, SMS, USSD and QR codes, reports NFC World. The company’s staff can register for the wallet on the TMN website and load up funds via credit card, PayPal or Mulitbanco. Other than making payments via the various aforementioned methods, users can also check balance and transaction history through the service. The trial is intended to gauge the usability and technical reliability of the wallet and the extent to which mobile payments affect buying behaviour.

Tiago Silva Lopes, head of the multi-platform data and content department at PT said the project is very important “because it will help us gain a better understanding of the technology that has been appearing on the market, including NFC, and of how people interact with these new technologies and with the possibility to pay via mobile phone.”

The pilot will take place in the company’s Lisbon offices and its innovation base in Aveiro.
