eBay Inc. appoints David Marcus as President of PayPal

To sharpen PayPal’s focus

The online auction site is appointing David Marcus as the new president of PayPal. Marcus succeeds Scott Thompson, who left the company in January, and will report to eBay president and CEO, John Donahoe (view press release). The position will commence from 2nd April, 2012.

Donahue said of Marcus, “he is a successful technology entrepreneur with a passion for great products that engage and delight customers. David leads with a founder’s perspective… He will bring start-up energy and will sharpen PayPal’s focus on accelerating product innovation, driving consumer engagement and making paying anytime, anywhere through your digital wallet a safe, easy and convenient experience.”

In his previous role as vice president of mobile at PayPal Marcus generated strong growth and innovation, including the development and launch of PayPal Here. He joined PayPal in August 2011 after the company completed the acquisition of Zong, of which he was CEO and founder.
