News Corporation accused of pay TV hacking in Australia

Operational Security

The allegations against News Corporation, made by the Australian Financial Review, claim that the media giant employed a special unit called Operational Security to sabotage competing pay-tv operators such as Austar and Optus by making pirate copies of their smart cards, reports the BBC.

The Australian arm of News Corp, News Limited, denies the accusations, claiming it has “spent considerable resources fighting piracy in Australia. It is ironic and deeply frustrating that we should be drawn into a story concerning the facilitation of piracy.”

A BBC Panorama programme televised on Monday also claimed that NDS, a News Corp UK subsidiary, had been hacking to acquire rival pay-tv operator ON Digital’s smart-card codes and making them available on the black market.
