Walmart offers ‘Pay with Cash’ for online payments

Make online purchases with cash in-store

Walmart customers can now browse the Walmart website, which offers hundreds of thousands more items than its stores, and purchase online items with cash in-store (view press release). The service works by the customer selecting to ‘Pay with Cash’ when checking out online, they then receive an order number and confirmation email receipt which they take to the nearest Walmart store within the next 48 hours and make the purchase in cash. The items are then dispatched to the customer’s home or nearest Walmart store.

One in four households in the US fall into the unbanked or underbanked categories and rely on cash to make purchases, claims an FDIC survey. Of this segment of society, 81% of the unbanked and 63% of the underbanked have internet access, according to Javelin Strategy and Research. Walmart says it is seeing more demand for cash payments online and a recent survey found that two thirds of the underbanked were likely to use cash for online payments if the option was available.

Many of our customers shop paycheck to paycheck and are looking for more ways to purchase items online but don’t have the means to a credit, debit or prepaid card,” said Walmart.com president and CEO, Joel Anderson.
