EMVCo figures highlight increasing global adoption of EMV

45% of cards and 76% of terminals now support EMV

Figures released today from EMVCo, the EMV standards body co-owned by American Express, JCB, MasterCard and Visa, reveals that 45% of payment cards and 76% of payment terminals worldwide now support EMV technology. These percentiles represent 1.5 billion EMV payment cards in circulation and 21.9 million EMV terminals now active worldwide. The data is based on Q4 2011 statistics taken from the card issuers’ respective affiliated financial instructions around the world.

By understanding the needs of all players, including payment card issuers, acquirers, merchants, processors, card and terminal vendors, networks and their representative associations, we can work to effectively and efficiently standardise the next generation payment landscape,” said Patricia Partelow, current Chair of the EMVCo Executive Committee. “We call on interested parties to engage in our participation framework and have a more active role in guiding EMVCo’s strategic and technical direction.”
