US e-commerce sales up 17% to USD44.3 billion

Damaging for some brick-and-mortar retailers

Online retail sales in the US increased to USD44.3 billion in Q1, up 17% year on year, according to a report from comScore. The growth was especially strong in categories such as digital content and subscriptions, computer software, consumer electronics, jewellery, watches and event tickets. The shift in retail to the web could be damaging for some brick-and-mortar retailers if they cannot retain their offline market share, says the report.
