MasterCard rolls out mobile POS programme for merchants

Best practices for mobile POS solution providers and merchants

MasterCard is launching the MasterCard Mobile Point-of-Sale (MPOS) programme (view press release). The solution aims at providing best practices to mobile POS solution providers and merchants, ensuring secure and simple transactions to consumers using credit, debit or prepaid cards with those merchants. The MasterCard MPOS Best Practices document includes guidance that merchants and solution providers should adhere to, as well as best practices regarding securing transaction data captured by an MPOS card reader accessory, securing Personal Account Numbers (PAN), securing MPOS payment applications, EMV chip transactions, displaying the MasterCard Acceptance Mark, merchant confirmation, Cardholder Verification Methods (CVM) and receipts. MasterCard estimates that there were around 1.2 million MPOS solutions shipped to MasterCard merchants globally by the end 2011. Around 75% of those merchants had not previously accepted payment card transactions. MasterCard is committed to expanding the MPOS programme in the coming months. Providers of MPOS solutions can evaluate their standards against the MasterCard MPOS Best Practices and apply to be listed as “certified” providers on MasterCard’s website. Members will be able to register from July 2012.

“The boom in mobile devices provides a huge opportunity for innovation across all industries – including payments,” explains James Anderson, Group Head, Mobile, MasterCard Worldwide. “With nearly 6 billion mobile subscriptions around the world, there is tremendous potential to grow merchant acceptance – it’s imperative that manufacturers, vendors and merchants maintain the highest standards to enable a seamless and secure purchasing experience.”
