Awareness increases for contactless technology in UK, claims YouGov

36% of UK consumers now aware of contactless technology

Awareness of contactless technology in mobile payments continues to increase in the UK, according to research from YouGov’s Mobile Wallet tracking study. Around 36% of UK consumers are now aware of the technology, while awareness of NFC is lower at just 12%.

Of those surveyed only 12% said they would adopt mobile payments over the next year, with 68% indicating that security and fraud is the main concern.  Consumers suggested however that they would be willing to adopt NFC or mobile payments with a loyalty scheme or incentive offered by the provider. “The market is saying: ‘speed and convenience is all well and good, but it has to be secure. Besides, what’s in it for me?’” said John Gilbert, consulting director for YouGov’s technology and telecoms sector.
