First National Bank launches Facebook banking service

Banking services via Facebook

First National Bank (FNB) Cellphone Banking is launching a new banking service via Facebook (view press release). The service will enable the bank’s customers to access certain banking services whilst on Facebook. To access banking through Facebook, customers need to link their Facebook profiles to their Cellphone Banking profile which will give them access to the ‘FNB Banking on Facebook’ application via Facebook. Once linked users will be able to check their balances, purchase prepaid products including airtime, SMS and Blackberry bundles, and view LOTTO and PowerBall results.

As a bank, we average around 15 000 conversations monthly, via social media, with existing and potential customers. It is without a doubt that social media banking is the next frontier – to us this is a channel that will provide our customers with more choice and convenience to do their banking,” said Ravesh Ramlakan, CEO of FNB Cellphone Banking. “There are currently more than 4.7 million active Facebook users in South Africa, and more than 150 000 of those are FNB Facebook fans, it is easier for our customers to purchase a data bundle or airtime whilst using Facebook,”

The new service follows the recent launch of FNB’s solution which allows customers to purchase vouchers using Cellphone Banking which can be posted on Facebook.
