Western Union launches Prepaid Gold Card in Philippines

Global payment services provider, Western Union, is launching the Western Union Gold Prepaid Card in the Philippines (view press release). Western Union is offering the card with VISA International and Union Bank of the Philippines. The company claims that this is the first of card on the market which allows users to make Western Union Money Transfer transactions directly onto the card by sending a text message, calling a customer-service hotline, visiting Western Unions Philippines website, or by visiting participating Western Union Agent locations in the country. In addition, cardholders can load their paychecks, government payments, their own cash and other earnings directly onto the card.

The card is the first in the Philippines to allow cardholders ‘split payout,’ directing part of a remittance onto their cards and receiving part in cash, the company claims. The card is also designed to introduce many Filipinos to the financial mainstream in a nation where, according to the World Bank, only 27% of adults over the age of 15 have bank accounts.
