Cathay United Bank collaborates with G&D for m-payment trial

Contactless payments at local stores

Taiwan’s Cathay United Bank has launched a trial for m-payments and transit in Taipei using technology from Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), according to Finextra. The bank hopes to allow its customers to use their mobile phones to make contactless payments at local stores and to access the Taipei public transit system. G&D Secure Flash Solutions have supplied the NFC-capable microSD cards used as a secure element in the project and the bank provided participants with NFC-capable HTC Incredible E NFC smartphones. The bank also issued Mobile Security Card SWP microSD cards, which were developed by G7D Secure Flash Solutions. The cards, which are compliant with MasterCard PayPassTM standards, will allow users to pay at stores by tapping their HTC phone on a specially equipped merchant terminal. The Mobile Security Card SWP has been approved by EasyCard Corporation to be used as a contactless ‘EasyCard’, the contactless transit card for the Taipei Metro (MRT) and buses. There is an integrated ‘auto’ top-up feature which allows the card’s balance to be topped up via MasterCard’s credit card functionality, providing an alternative to topping up with banknotes. Pre-charged fares are deducted automatically from the card when the HTC NFC phone and Mobile Security Card SWP is passed over the EasyCard sensor on faregates, on buses or in merchant stores.
