Starbucks incorporates Apple’s Passbook

Pay for drinks via mobiles

Starbucks is incorporating Apple’s Passbook app from the end of September, according to reports. This means that the coffee giant will integrate its existing Starbucks digital payment card into the new app for users to pay for their hot drinks. To use the service, customers can scan a barcode that appears on the user’s smartphone display over an optical reader in-store.

Passbook, a feature of Apple’s newly released iOS 6, is a mobile wallet that allows iPhone and iPod touch users to keep frequently used cards at their fingertips. Starbucks has been using similar technology for over a year, which allows its customers to store money on a Starbucks card that is loaded into a smartphone app available for both iPhone and Android phones. Starbucks’ customers can pay for their coffee by scanning the barcode that appears on the user’s smartphone display over an optical reader at Starbucks.

The news follows the deal American Express struck with Apple application.
