Starbucks is to begin accepting Square Wallet mobile payments in the US, following the announcement of the high-profile deal in August (view press release). The coffee shop chain says that the service will be available in about 7,000 stores from early November, with plans to expand the service to include tipping by the summer of 2013. During the initial launch of the service, customers will receive barcodes to be scanned for payment at the coffee store's checkout counter. However, in the future the payment process is expected to use GPS technology to detect Square users' phones in the store, enabling customers to pay simply by giving cashiers their name. As part of the deal, Square says it will lower Starbucks' payment processing fees.
