Vodafone and Visa launching mobile payments system in Australia

Partnering Visa

Vodafone and Visa have unveiled plans to launch a contactless mobile payments system in Australia, called SmartPass (view press release). The new system, that will be launched next year, enables customers to use an NFC-SIM from Vodafone and download the SmartPass app to a compatible handset. Then, once they have registered for a virtual Visa reloadable pre-paid card they can pre-load funds from their Visa or MasterCard, and can make payments of up to A$100 by tapping their handsets against the Visa payWave readers installed at thousands of retail outlets across the country.

Thomas Roets, General Manager of Strategy and Business Development at Vodafone revealed that the new service will be subjected to intensive trials before it is rolled out nationally to ensure the highest standards of security with the most simple functionality and convenience for customers.”

Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) and prepaid payment processors Rev have also been involved in the development of the Vodafone SmartPass solution.
