Vodafone planning for M-Pesa launch for Myanmar

Vodafone

Looking to establish in Myanmar

Plans to bring the M-Pesa mobile payments platform to Myanmar are in the pipeline for Vodafone. This may depend on whether or not it wins a bid to operate a mobile network in the South East Asian country.

As the country opens its borders to the outside world, Myanmar has invited telecommunications companies to bid for two mobile licenses in the country. Vodafone and China Mobile are majoring a joint offer according to some reports.

Myanmar’s payments infrastructure is still in its development stages. Handset penetration is below 10% and Visa and MasterCard have begun working with local banks on point-of-sale systems and ATMs.
