South Shore App lets commuters use phone as train ticket

Passengers on the US South Shore Line from Chicago to South Bend, Indiana can now use an innovative new app to buy and show their tickets.

The South Shore App has been developed by Bytemark, a New York start-up that specialises in mobile ticketing and payment solutions for the transit industry, in partnership with the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD). Customers can use the app to search train maps and schedules on their Apple IOS or Android devices, purchase tickets by card and then present their smartphone screen to the conductor in place of a physical ticket.  The NICTD believes that the app’s ease of use will appeal to customers and expects the idea to catch on quickly.

Micah Bergdale, CEO of Bytemark, said: “Bytemark is excited to partner with NICTD to launch the South Shore App. Mobile ticketing is becoming a standard for transit systems around the world, and we are pleased to provide our flexible and secure mobile ticketing solution to commuters across Indiana and Illinois.”
