JCB launches global payment service using NFC

The international payment brand and credit card issuer JCB has announced the launch of J/Speedy, a new card and terminal system that uses NFC technology to speed up customer payments.

JCB customers will be able to hold their card near the terminal to make a secure payment without needing to sign or enter a pin. The company, which was founded in Japan in 1961, will trial the system in Tokyo this month before rolling it out across the country next year through its subsidiary JCBI. However, the technology meets all International NFC payment protocols, meaning that J/Speedy can then be introduced for JCB customers all over the world. At present, the company has issued 84 million cards in 16 countries and territories, whilst its network covers 26 million merchants across 190 countries and territories.

Tac Watanabe, Executive Vice President of Infrastructure & Technologies at JCBI, said: “As card payment markets develop in emerging economies in Asia and smartphones become widespread, the need for contactless card and mobile payment is growing. To meet its expectation in such new technology based payments, we will continue to provide a wide variety of payment services to the worldwide market, as well as build a payment infrastructure in Japan for inbound travellers.”
