Secret Amazon plans to launch mobile credit card reader uncovered

Evidence has surfaced to suggest that Amazon is planning to release a credit card reader that will connect to smartphones to carry out payments, say insiders.

Internal Staples documents obtained by 9to5Mac suggest that the reader will cost $9.99, and could be made available in US stores from 12 August. The documents also seem to show that the product will be offered alongside brands such as Square and PayPal.

Separately, sources say that Amazon’s Lab126 hardware division is developing other mobile payment-related products that focus on biometric fingerprint scanners. Despite a shaky start to the year, it seems that Amazon’s behind-the-scenes machinations are sets to propel them to the forefront of the mobile  payments space.
