India’s largest retailer launches first online store

Reliance Retail, India’s largest retail outlet by revenue, has launched its first online grocery store for customers in certain Mumbai districts.

Described by the Times of India as the first “baby step” towards e-commerce, RelianceFreshDirect.com will sell and deliver similar fresh and packaged foods, as well as personal care items, to households in South Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and some areas of Thane. The move follows a successful pilot project at the Reliance Corporate Park office in Navi Mumbai.

The products on offer will be similar to those on offer in Reliance Mart and Reliance Fresh stores, and will either be delivered direct from the nearest store or from the company’s other distribution channels.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We continue to explore newer markets and channels to leverage our solid foundation. The launch of RelianceFreshDirect.com adds the `direct delivery’ channel to our network, besides convenience and choice to our valued customers. Over time we will certainly augment the direct delivery model.”
