HSBC names new head of payments for Asia Pacific

HSBC has announced the appointment of Kee Joo Wong as head of payments and cash management for the Asia Pacific region.

Wong will officially start in this role on January 1st 2015, becoming responsible for developing, directing and implementing HSBC’s cash management strategies in the region. He will report to head of global payments and cash management Diane Reyes, as well as answering locally to the bank’s general managers and heads of commercial banking and global banking and markets respectively, Noel Quinn and Gordon French.

Wong joined HSBC as head of PCM production management, becoming head of PCM Thailand in 2007 before being appointed head of the same in China in 2010. Before his decade of employment with HSBC, Wong worked at Citibank in Singapore, London and Hong Kong.

Recent advancements in renminbi payments and the wider liberalisation of China’s payments landscape are a key focus of HSBC’s current Asia strategy.

“Kee Joo brings extensive experience at the forefront of the liberalisation of the renminbi (Rmb) in the last three years, and has a proven track record of supporting our customers’ growth as they seek to do business in China,” Reyes commented.

Last month China opted to open up its market for clearing domestic bank card transactions, promising to allow foreign firms access to its fast-growing electronic payments market.
