eBay prepares for PayPal split with Apple hire

eBay is preparing for PayPal’s spin-off by building up its talent, adding Apple’s Bora Chung to its payments technology team.

Chung, who worked on global payments technology for Apple online stores, has joined a new division led by chief product office RJ Pittman, SF Gate reports. Pittman is also an Apple alumni, who joined Google in 2013 after leading Apple’s worldwide e-commerce platform for the Apple online stores.

Before joining Apple, Chung spent from 2007 to 2011 at PayPal, starting out at  senior director of global platform operations before becoming senior director of branded payments. She previously worked as a banking analyst at Merryl Lynch and at Asian-centric venture capital Athena Technology Ventures.

The move is thought to be part of an eBay ploy to find a replacement payments protocol to PayPal, which is due to become a separate company later this year. While it could still be possible that the two separate companies could partner for eBay payments, the e-commerce giant’s latest moves are making this seem unlikely.
