Line partners with CyberSource to take Line Pay worldwide

Line is expanding its mobile payment system through a partnership with global e-commerce payment company CyberSource.

CyberSource is owned by Visa, and its payment management and security services are used by over 400,000 businesses worldwide.

The US-based company will act as a strategic partner to Line as it accelerates the growth of Line Pay outside Japan. Using CyberSource’s global payment gateway, Line will be able to process online payments from multiple card brands and issuers, as well as certain alternative payment methods, the company said.

Financial terms were not disclosed, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Line’s mobile messaging app has over 181 million active users globally, and is especially popular in Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. The company is hoping to take Line Pay, which handles purchases for in-app extras such as stickers, much further.

Earlier this week, several Japanese online shopping sites including Zozotown marketplace and music store HMV Online revealed plans to start accepting Line Pay.
