ZapChain adds bitcoin tipping to social network

Bitcoin-inspired social network ZapChain is experimenting with content monetisation with the launch of an in-house tipping mechanism.

Users will now be able to ‘Tip’ someone who has asked a question on the network, or provided an answer. Clicking the green ‘Tip’ button will prompt users to send bits – units of bitcoins – in pre-set amounts visualised as a coffee, an apple, or a pizza.

ZapChain CEO Matt Schilt told Coinbase that the company’s micropayments move “was inspired by the lack of available venues for consumers to have introductory experiences with bitcoin.” Coinbase opted to close its tipping service in February.

Microtransactions are being hailed as a new way for content creators to make money on the web.
