TfL’s contactless success story enters next stage

Transport for London says that its contactless card payment system is proving a huge success – but that many customers are embracing smartphone payments as the next step of the initiative.

Since its introduction six months ago, payments for travel via contactless credit and debit touched gate sensors have soared in popularity, with 500,000 journeys each day paid for in this way.

However, support for mobile payments is “live” according to TfL’s Director of Customer Experience Sharma Verma. Customers with the ability to use their smartphones to pay for journeys are gradually making the switch.

“This milestone for TfL shows just how quickly consumers have taken to contactless in London,” commented Scott Abrahams, group head of acceptance and emerging payments at MasterCard UK and Ireland.

“This extraordinary take up is having a halo effect on other businesses in the UK who accept contactless payments. They are also seeing a significant shift in the way their customers are choosing to pay.”
