Irish payments company Realex bought by US firm

US-based Global Payments has picked up Irish payment technology company Realex payments in a deal worth €115 million.

European payment gateway Realex Payments was founded by entrepreneur Colm Lyon in 2000 and provides a range of technology services for businesses selling online. The company processes payments worth more than €28bn a year for 12,500 retailers throughout Europe, including Vodafone, Paddy Power, Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic.

The deal will help further Global Payments’ plans provide omni-channel solutions that combine gateway services, payment service provisioning and merchant acquiring across Europe. The Atlanta-based Fortune 1000 company does business in 28 countries for more than 1.5 million merchants.

“We are thrilled to be joining the Global Payments team,” said Colm Lyon. “It’s great news for our customers, for our employees, and for Ireland.”
