Gemalto to launch DubaiCard kiosk at payment expo

Digital security firm Gemalto are preparing to showcase a range of new payment security solutions at the 2015 Cards and Payments Middle East exhibition.

The annual event, which is being held at the Dubai international convention and exhibition centre between the 12th and 13th May, is designed to highlight the Middle East’s development in the mobile technology sector. The latest designs in e-commerce, mobile banking, NFC and wearable payment technology will be presented to industry supporters.

Gemalto is headlining the exhibition with the DubaiCard kiosk, the world’s first self-service kiosk to instantly issue payment cards, and will mark the technology’s foray into the UAE.

‘‘The world of financial services and payments is evolving at a brisk pace, with digital and mobile banking taking centre stage, and NFC payments following suit. New technologies and disruptive payment solutions are creating a vibrant marketplace with significant opportunities for payment innovations for both banked and unbanked markets,’’ said Eric Claudel, President for Middle East and Africa at Gemalto.

The kiosk is powered by Gemalto’s Dexxis card instant issuance solution. Over 200 kiosks will be installed later this year across the Emirates, as part of phase one of the technology’s nation-wide insertion.

‘‘Our solutions have the capability to support a wide range of customer demands for increasingly personalized, convenient, yet secure options, and our line-up of demos at Cards & Payments ME is designed to further validate this claim,’’ continued Claudel.

The DubaiCard kiosk is not the only product that Gemalto are showcasing at the event. With wearable payment technology set to grow rapidly within the Middle East in the next five years, the digital security company are demonstrating the use of the Optelio contactless MiniTag, a wearable wristband used to make contactless payments.

Although wearable payment technology may become a success in the Middle East, the devices are not proving successful in the UK. Payment Eye reported today that Barclaycard are scrapping their contactless payment wristband at the end of this month.
