Over a quarter of online transactions are now being made on mobiles

Adyen’s quarterly Mobile Payments Index (MPI) reveals UK is way ahead of the pack in terms of mobile payments.

The MPI, which tracks payment data from Adyen customers’ mobile-based transactions revealed that payments made through mobiles are on the rise. They now account for 27.2 per cent of all payments made online in the first quarter of 2015. That is up from 25.8 per cent from last year’s fourth quarter – usually a period of very high online spending.

“There has been a seismic shift in how and where people are comfortable spending money. All mobile channels in the past 12 months have experienced impressive uplift,” Roelant Prins, CCO with Adyen, commented,

The US market increased by 5 per cent, with 26.7 per cent online payments being made on the mobile.

However, UK is quite a way ahead of anyone else. In the first quarter of 2015, nearly half (44.4 per cent) of all online transactions were made through a mobile. Up from last year’s corresponding quarter percentage – 36.9 per cent.

“The UK’s position as the world’s number one in mobile payments speaks volumes for the country’s payments infrastructure, its highly competitive mobile network landscape and the general populations’ continued willingness to exploit new payment channels,” Myles Dawson, UK country manager for Adyen, observed
