Samsung to work with Oberthur Technologies for European launch of Samsung Pay

Oberthur Technologies (OT), the French digital security company, announced today that it will partner with Samsung for the South Korean company’s European launch of Samsung Pay.

Samsung’s S6 and S6 Edge smartphones already have OT’s NFC embedded Secure Element (eSE), PEARL and OT will act as the end-to-end service that will connect the eSE to the digital enablement platform when Samsung Pay is rolled-out in Europe.

“Since the early stage of the Samsung Pay service definition, OT has been a key partner to us, both for their innovative mindset and technological expertise and for their strong banking customer footprint,” said Dr. Injong Rhee, executive vice president of Mobile Commerce at Samsung Electronics.

Banks that work with Samsung and OT will be able to store their NFC payment cards in the Samsung Pay application. OT says that the ‘enrolment, provisioning and lifecycle processes for the banks’ will be managed by Samsung and itself. The company says this way the financial institutions will not have to make significant infrastructure investments.

To start using the cards through the Samsung Pay application, the user will have to take a photograph of the card they want to use and accept the terms and conditions. The user will then be authenticated by the bank and OT will make the card available for use through the app.

“We are very proud to have been the first selected by Samsung for the launch of Samsung Pay in Europe and to bring this new service to the many banks who will partner with us in Europe,” said Marek Juda, managing director of the Solutions Business Unit at OT.
