Qualcomm Technologies, (QTI) has announced that NTT Docomo will become the first company to adopt and implement its Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform, making it easier for Japanese customers to make mobile payments.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon biometrics platform allows customers to make secure payments on a consistent basis. The technology provides password-less authentication, enhanced security of biometric data and data processing, and addresses the challenge of creating and remembering multiple pin-codes and passwords.
“We are pleased with DOCOMO’s recent launch of authentication services based on the Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform in order to offer its consumers an improved authentication and mobile payment experience on their mobile devices,’’ said Raj Talluri, senior vice president, product management, QTI.
This announcement reinforces Docomo’s efforts to provide improved and enhanced security to its 65 million mobile customers in Japan. The mobile firm is also introducing a new ‘‘Docomo ID login authentication and carrier billing payment’’ service which will grant easier access for customers to make digital payments. This comes on the back of the news that Docomo has joined the board of directors at FIDO Alliance (Fast Identity Online), a consortium that seeks to standardise password-less authentication.
“Today is a historic day for the FIDO Alliance, as NTT DOCOMO is not only our newest board member, they are the world’s first Mobile Network Operator to deploy FIDO authentication,” said FIDO Alliance president Dustin Ingalls.
The Snapdragon platform will be used in tandem with third-party biometric sensors for Docomo’s mobile biometric authentication service. The technology will be implemented across Docomo’s entire network.
‘‘Users want more effective and convenient ways to access their mobile devices and services with easier yet stronger authentication, and QTI is setting the standard when it comes to innovative solutions that directly address those concerns,’’ continued Talluri.
‘‘By collaborating with Qualcomm Technologies on the deployment of the Snapdragon Sense ID biometrics platform, our customers can now unlock their phones without having to key in a pincode, and can make mobile payments with a quick glance,’’ said Seiji Maruyama, senior vice president and managing director of product department, NTT Docomo.
