Whilst we tend to think that mobile payments is a child of the 21st century, this infographic reminds us that its early years were actually in the 1990s rather than the 2000s, with Coca-Cola’s SMS receptive vending machines.
In 1997 in Helskinki, Finland, one could pay for a drink from select Coca-Cola vending machines by sending an SMS text message. According to the infographic below by emerchantbroker.com, in 2016, there will be nearly half a trillion mobile payment users in the world.
