Americans warming to mobile cheque system, survey finds

One in seven Americans have deposited a cheque using a mobile device in the past 12 months, according to a survey from the American Bankers Association (ABA), up from one in eight a year prior.

While the survey found an uptick in the total number of Americans who have used mobile deposit, a full 82 per cent said they had never deposited a cheque by taking a photo on their smartphone.

Of those who have used mobile deposit, the number of people utilising the service at least once per month declined year-on-year from 80 per cent to 54 per cent.

According to Nessa Feddis, senior vice president and deputy chief council for consumer protection and payments at the ABA, this decline could be due to an overall decrease in the popularity of cheques.

She said: “People are receiving cheques less frequently, but when they do they’re increasingly turning to mobile banking to deposit them. Mobile has become a bigger part of how people interact with their bank and we expect banks to continue to expand and enhance customer services available through mobile devices.”
