Checkout.com has improved its service for merchants selling into Europe with the integration of Sofort on its Checkout platform, offering access to a potential 18 million new customers in 13 countries.

The addition of payment method Sofort is part of Checkout’s efforts to build partnerships with regional payment providers around the world in an attempt to offer a comprehensive cross-border online payment solution.

These local agreements complement the platform’s direct acquiring relationships with Visa Europe, MasterCard International, Union Pay International, American Express, Diners Club International and the Discover Network to provide international credit and debit card processing.

Checkout.com allows merchants in a given market to connect local payments through multiple methods including online banking, prepaid cards and e-wallets, with the site acting as a single integration point.

Founded in 2010, the payment platform has been hard at work extending its global reach. Earlier this month it announced a deal with Tenpay, giving merchants access to customers in China, an e-commerce market The Economist predicts will be bigger than America, Britain, Japan, Germany and France combined by 2020.

Our relationship with Sofort is already a few years old and we are very happy to have them live on our new platform,” said Checkout.com CEO Mathieu Altwegg. “Relentlessly, Sofort and the Klarna Group are pushing the innovation agenda in the European payment space.”

Dr. Gerrit Seidel, CEO of Sofort, added: “With Checkout.com integrating Sofort Überweisung in its portfolio, now even more merchants worldwide are able to make use of our safe and simple payment method and reach out to their customers. The cooperation with Checkout.com helps us not only to strengthen our position in Europe, but especially to drive our global growth”.
