Champagne, networking and stories about payments: FinTech Innovation Award winners revealed

Last night, over 500 of the best and brightest fintech innovators gathered at the second annual FinTech Innovation Awards.

Held at The Brewery in central London, the awards were hosted by Julia Streets and welcomed Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General as a guest speaker. The evening also featured a fascinating keynote presentation from Dan Ariely, bestselling author and Professor of Psychology and Behaviour at Duke University.

Dan captivated the audience with several anecdotes that crystallized a lot of ideas we have about payments. One notable story involved how our view of money is relative: if a shop assistant at a stationer’s  that sells a pen for £30 tells us that a shop further down the road sells the exact same pen for £8 less, we would more often than not go to the second shop. But if we go to buy a suit for £1500 and the shop assistant tells us that a shop down the road sells the exact same suit for £8 cheaper, we would probably stay in the first shop. The £8 is the same, but everything around that is different.

The attendees’ laughter showed how the payments and fintech industry as a whole would do well to heed Dan Ariely’s advice and start thinking more about the psychology of payments.

And now to the reason why were all suited and booted last night: the winners of the awards.
