Android Pay launches in Hong Kong

Android Pay is now available in Hong Kong and is available at over 5,000 locations in Hong Kong where contactless payments are accepted.

Where does it work?

Hong Kong becomes Google’s payment service’s fifth location following the US, the UK, Singapore and Australia and its users can now make contactless payments with the service at 5,000-plus locations including stores such as at 7-Eleven, Circle K, Fortress, Mannings, Maxim’s Cakes, MX, McDonald’s, Pacific Coffee, PARKnSHOP, SmarTone, Watsons and Wellcome.

The payment service will also store gift cards loyalty cards and special offers on the phone. It is also integrated into platforms such as delivery services including Deliveroo and Boutir Collect. Google says compatibility with Uber and the apps will come soon.

What banks will it work with?

Android Pay works with MasterCard and Visa cards from BEA, DBS, Dah Sing Bank, Hang Seng Bank, HSBC, and Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong. You can add multiple cards, and there isn’t actually a limit on how many cards you can add, and select which card you want to use before you pay.

“With a mobile subscriber penetration rate reaching 227.9 percent and nearly 17 million mobile subscribers in Hong Kong[2], this makes it natural for people to use mobiles for payments. With the introduction of Android Pay, it will help displace cash and propel electronic payments in the city. Visa is pleased to work with Google to introduce Android Pay, enabled by Visa Token Service for secure payments,” said Caroline Ada, Country Manager of Visa Hong Kong and Macau.
