Amazon Go introduces a checkout-free experience

On December 5th, Amazon announced a new store concept called Amazon Go, which introduces a completely checkout-free shopping experience.

To shop, people sign in at the entrance with their Amazon Go app, which digitally scans a bar code. Consumers can then browse without any fuss. The cost of the selected items will be automatically billed to shoppers’ Amazon accounts.

The first public Amazon Go store will be introduced in Amazon’s hometown of Seattle in the new year, and is currently being beta tested. The store will offer a wide range of food options and fresh foods that are made daily.

The checkout-free experience uses the same technology used in self-driving cars. GPS sensors will track and record which products the consumers takes, and when they leave the store a digital receipt is sent to the customer.

The shift to a frictionless consumer experience has become more prominent over the past year, where both consumers and retailers are looking for a shift to make processing payments enjoyable. The Amazon Go store is predicted to enhance customer experience and confuse shoplifters.

“Amazon Go is a new kind of store with no checkout required. We created the world’s most advanced shopping technology so you never have to wait in line. With our Just Walk Out Shopping experience, simply use the Amazon Go app to enter the store, take the products you want, and go! No lines, no checkout. (No, seriously.)” states Amazon

The “Shop and Just Walk Out” stores will be introduced in the US in 2017.
