Samsung Pay goes live in UK with Mastercard

Mastercard Digital Enablement Service ensures safe and secure mobile payments with Samsung Pay

With Samsung Pay now launching in the UK, Mastercard cardholders have, as of today, even more ways to make safe and convenient payments. Mastercard is working with the major banks Santander and MBNA to enable their cardholders to use their Mastercard with Samsung Pay, which enables innovative, easy and secure mobile payments throughout the UK.

Samsung Pay allows consumers to pay almost anywhere wherever contactless payments are accepted. Mastercard contactless payments are accepted in 96 countries and more than six million merchant locations worldwide.

“Tokens” to ensure secure mobile payments

In setting up a device for Samsung Pay, Mastercard generates a digital “token” that is associated with each particular device and stored on a secure server. This means that not only is the token number different from the ‘real’ card number but it is also specific to the cardholder’s device and therefore can’t be used in conjunction with any other device.

When a consumer uses their Samsung device* in a transaction, it is the token and not their real card number that is provided to the shop. For shoppers and retailers alike, every Mastercard purchase made through Samsung Pay offers all the benefits and guarantees of a transaction with a physical card.

The tokenisation process is powered by the Mastercard Digital Enablement Service (MDES), which allows mobile phones and other ‘commerce devices’ to make payments using industry-standard ‘tokenisation’. Mastercard has launched the MDES service in 13 European countries.

Mark Barnett, President, Mastercard UK & Ireland said: “We are thrilled to see Samsung Pay land in the UK, and we are enjoying working alongside them our partner banks on behalf of our cardholders. Every Samsung Pay transaction made with Mastercard is highly secure – a critical part of this is our ability to tokenise cardholder details”.

Available in UK now

As of today, owners of eligible Samsung devices will be able to make payments with  Samsung Pay by simply adding their Mastercard credit and debit cards onto the app.

*Samsung Pay is available at launch on the Galaxy S8/S8+, S7/S7 edge, S6/S6 edge (subject to a software update) and will become available on additional devices in the coming months.
