Google merges online and mobile payment services

Search giant Google is merging its online payments service Checkout into its broader Wallet product, which focuses on the expanding mobile payments space. Current Checkout users will be automatically transitioned to Wallet when they next log in to the service, with Google working with retailers over the coming months to update logos and web functionality.

“Shoppers using Google Wallet will be able to make purchases seamlessly on merchant sites that accept Google Checkout,” writes product manager Ben Lee in an official blog post. He also announces that MasterCards issued by Citigroup and registered with the Google Wallet mobile app will now be available to use online, with users only needing to enter a username and password to make purchases.
