Google issues fix and gives the go ahead on prepaid cards

Google has restored the ability to issue prepaid cards to the Google Wallet and implemented a fix that prevents a prepaid card from being re-provisioned by another person. (view announcement)

The Wallet’s vulnerability lay in the fact that due to prepaid card data being stored directly on the device, someone could access account funds (on phones without screen lock) by simply resetting the Google wallet service, entering a new PIN and using the existing prepaid card registered to the phone. No abuse of the prepaid cards or the Wallet pin has been reported since last week’s hack announcements and the fixes were implemented as a precautionary measure.

Google Wallet VP Osama Bedier says that “if you are unable to access your prepaid card balance for any reason, please contact our toll-free support for assistance.”
