Square fare
Mobile payments firm Square is reportedly aiming to replace the TV screens currently ubiquitous in New York’s taxis with tablet devices that will use its payment technology to accept credit card payments for fares. Sources speaking to CBS say Square recently met with the US Taxi and Limousine Commission to float a trial of the service, which would see cabs fitted with tablet devices in the back seats rather than their current displays. Check-in service Foursquare is also thought to be linked to the discussions, but a pilot programme has not been confirmed and it is not clear what Foursquare’s involvement might be.
Should Square succeed in implementing a trial programme in an urban environment it could go some way to laying the foundations for Square’s technology to become a default card payment system. The service is already hugely popular in the US, processing USD11m in payments per day in November and reaching 1m merchant users in December last year.
