The app, called SmartPay, allows users to make fuel payments without having to leave the car and offers discounts of $.05 cents per gallon, reports techcrunch.com. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and functions alongside a PayPal account. When launched, the app uses GPS to establish the location of the petrol station (the pump number can be entered manually) and the fuel charge is then sent to PayPal for processing; an email is sent as receipt. PayPal is behind the discount which is intended to increase awareness for the app.
The app can currently only be used at just 50 petrol stations in Massachusetts but Cumberland Farms plans to expand the solution to its 600 stations along the east coast.
