BWG Foods and Visa Europe team up for contactless payments

Rolling out contactless payment

Ireland based BWG Foods, owner of retail stores including Spar, Eurospar, Mace and XL, is collaborating with Visa Europe to roll out contactless payments in its stores from the end of April, reports the IrishTimes. Through the new deal, BWG will implement the technology in the majority of its 900 stores across Ireland by the end of the year. The NFC solution is designed to speed up the payment process by enabling people to make purchases of up to €15 by simply swiping or tapping their card against the reader. For purchases of over €15 a PIN is required for authentication. The new infrastructure will lay down the foundations for NFC mobile payments which are due to be rolled out over the next few years.

Willie O’Byrne, MD at BWG Foods says that the average transaction at many of its convenience stores is less than €10 so “we expect to perform very well in this space… It will provide an additional layer of convenience for our shoppers, who will benefit from reduced queues and faster throughout.”
