"The operating system for local commerce"
Groupon has launched Groupon Rewards in the US, a loyalty points system which merchants using the site to offer deals will be able to sign onto. Groupon will track individual consumer’s spending at participating businesses and notify them when they’re due a reward after a spending an amount set by each merchant.
Following a string of accounting mishaps, disappointing earnings, board reshuffles and shareholder lawsuits, this new product is one of four new initiatives CEO Andrew Mason says will make the site “the operating system for local commerce“. Mason claims that Groupon Rewards will demonstrate the loyalty generated by the site to merchants. In the past month 30% of Groupon’s eligible merchants have signed onto the scheme.
