PayPal is set to launch UK-only mobile wallet app, PayPal InStore. The payment platform has partnered with fashion chain, Aurora, to let customers use the app, which will initially be available to Android and iOS devices, in women’s clothing stores Oasis, Coast, Karen Millen and Warehouse. Rather than relying upon NFC technology, the app generates a unique barcode that the merchant scans to deduct money from a customer’s PayPal account after a four-digit pin is entered. Unlike platforms using NFC, PayPal’s does not require merchants or smartphone users to upgrade their devices. Consumers are sent email confirmation of all transactions and the app can be used to return online purchases in store. San Jose-based PayPal, an eBay subsidiary, has stated that it will use 2012 to test various mobile payment services.
