BlockBeacon, which connects local businesses with consumers, has launched an iPhone app, enabling users to discover food and drink deals on the go. The company takes businesses’ updates from Facebook and Twitter, as well as allowing them to post directly on BlockBeacon, helping users discover new places and promotions in their local area. CEO Brandon Mills believes that the service plugs a gap left by other social media channels. “You don’t want to friend or follow 200 businesses,” he says.
Along with the launch, the Santa Monica-based startup has raised USD500,000 in a funding round led by seed-stage venture capital firm Resolute.VC. BlockBeacon, which is so far focused on the San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego areas, has short term plans to expand to more cities, with the support of their local governments and city organisations.
