Mastercard is teaming up with Deutsche Telekom to bring NFC mobile payments to Europe. The service will first be available to customers in Poland in Q3, and will launch in Germany soon after, initially with a trial of phone tags and cards before the introduction of a mobile wallet next year. The SIM-based service will utilise Mastercard’s subsidiary ClickandBuy, which has an e-money licence, to allow people to pay for products and services using their phones.
“This is a huge step on our way to increase mobile payments. With MasterCard we have a well-known and experienced partner generating growth in this important market segment. We want to build a comprehensive ecosystem around mobile payment, helping Telekom to realise its strategy of being the first choice for customers regarding connected life and work,” says chief product and innovation officer for Deutsche Telekom, Thomas Kiessling.
The partnership is not the first of its kind in the burgeoning mobile payments market, with Vodaphone pairing up with Visa earlier this year.
